What is simultaneous interpretation?

Simultaneous interpretation is the practice of interpreting a speaker’s speech into another language in real time. Simultaneous interpretation usually happens with 2+ interpreters who are physically present at the venue and deliver interpretation via a hardware console. For onsite simultaneous interpretation, you’ll need a soundproof booth, hardware including the interpreter’s consoles, control unit, Infrared (IR) receiver headset, recharging unit, IR radiant panels, and a lot of maintenance.

What is remote simultaneous interpretation?

Remote simultaneous interpretation (RSI) is simultaneous interpretation 2.0 where every person (including interpreters!) can receive a live video & audio feed virtually. RSI allows interpreters, participants, and speakers to connect remotely from any place on Earth and interact in their own language. All you need to make RSI happen is a phone or a laptop, headset, and Internet connection to join the meeting.

About the event

Challenge

The UNCTAD DODR Project trusted in a reliable solution to facilitate multilingual communication with its beneficiary countries: Indonesia and Thailand. The DODR Project needed to understand the state of consumer dispute resolution in those countries; therefore, various highly technical and legal workshops and software requirement specification meetings have been organised to help them grasp the challenges and propose technological solutions.

It was essential to guarantee a constant communication loop to ensure a precise understanding of the present situation in the beneficiary countries.

In doing so, interpretation was requisite because the two major subject matters - legal and technology - are challenging to express, understand and explain in a non-native language.

Approach

To meet the needs of the long-running collaboration between the DODR Project and its beneficiary countries, the Interactio team assisted with interpretation and technical support. From matching the DODR Project with the right interpreters to helping with the setup, we helped ensure that there were no obstacles to communication, regardless of distance, language barriers, and time schedules. Throughout our collaboration, we supported three main activities of the project and connected speakers, attendees, and organizers from 5 continents.

As a result of our collaboration, the DODR Project successfully held training workshops for over 300 people, which became more accessible, both from an inclusivity and cost-effectiveness point of view. With no traveling required, the organizers were able to dedicate more time and resources to what mattered more - the value of their workshops and the multilingual element involved. From the participants’ point of view, it was an enriching experience not only from a capacity perspective but also value-wise. Attendees were able to hear on best practices on consumer dispute resolution from experts in the field from Asia, Latin America, Western Europe, the United States, South Africa, and more. Professional interpretation also made it possible for the DODR Project to be as specific as possible - understanding and addressing the legal and technological challenges in Indonesia and Thailand.

Based on the expressed requirements, we matched the DODR Project with a team of certified and highly experienced interpreters. The language professionals delivered stellar interpretation in Bahasa, Thai, Chinese, and English across highly technical IT and law-related topics. The event organizers highlighted the convenience and readiness of the interpreters, even for the most complex and niche conversations.

The Interactio technical support team assisted with webinars, workshops, and meetings of the project and ensured that the multilingual experience was delivered with no interruptions. More specifically, the team prepared and tested the event set-up at least one hour in advance, no matter the timezone, and stayed connected for live support in case of any difficulties.
